I have just finished watching The Power Practice videos that I recently purchased from Gary Gerber and I wanted to share my impressions with anyone who is considering purchasing the videos. Buy them now! It will be the best investment in your practice you have ever made. I am excited about the explosive growth of my practice that will be a result of implementing just a portion of the ideas from these videos.
First some background. I have been in solo practice for almost five years (after 4 years at a large ophthalmology group practice). When I first went solo I was excited about building my "own" practice. But after a few years of the headaches of private practice such as staff turnover and a large influx of managed care in our area, I became very discouraged about my practice and optometry in general. I was ready to sell my practice and go back to employee status.
These videos have helped me adjust my attitude about my practice from pessimism to optimism. I feel like the ideas and the motivational message in these videos that anyone can build a huge practice if they want to work hard enough, have given me back that excitement about my profession that I've been missing.
I've already been seeing the practical benefits of this information in my practice. By modifying and improving my techniques for case presentations as taught in the videos I have had more patients taking my recommendations for multiple pairs of glasses as well as contact lens wearers upgrading into daily disposables at my recommendation. From just this one idea the video seminar has already paid for itself in just a few days. Also the videos contain the first workable plan I've seen for pre-appointing patients that addresses and overcomes patient's resistance to the concept. I'll let you know how it works out for our office as we implement it.
By using the Dr. Gerber's Four R's of Case Presentation, I made back the cost of the video package in about three days! Patients are much more receptive to things like purchasing two pairs of glasses. I can't believe how easy it is! Gary, I wish you had this package available a long time ago! The section on case presentation - all by itself - is easily worth much more than I paid for the entire package. Great job!
I know I sound like a salesman for Gary but I don't have any financial interest in anything other than making my practice highly profitable and better able to serve my patients (two things which go hand in hand). I'm also glad to have my excitement back about our wonderful profession. I think that the more ODs that start utilizing these techniques the better off optometry will be as a profession.

I have purchased Gary's tapes. They are very well done and extremely informative.
A week and a half ago I simply changed the way I was making case presentations to the way Gary suggests on the tapes. The tapes paid for themselves that day. I easily was able to sell at least 3 pairs of glasses that I am convinced I would not have sold using my old case presentation. In fact Pam, who is responsible for helping patients with frame and lens selection, remarked at how much easier her job was that day. And I had not told her about my change in presentation until after she made her remark at the end of the day. With that one change I have now experienced my best month ever (with still half a week to go).
Even if I implemented no other changes, the tapes have been more than worth their cost. I will continue to implement the changes as time goes on. I expect that each change will have differing effects on the bottom line, but taken together, I expect these changes will help to make my practice more patient friendly and take it to the next level.
I have no financial interest in Gary Gerber nor any of his business endeavors. Nor do I have a financial interest in any of his sponsors. Having made all the proper disclaimers, I heartily endorse his tapes. You will definitely not regret having made the purchase.

Being unable to go to any of his seminars, since they get booked up quick and only had one here in Chicago, I went ahead and bought the tapes. What I like about the tapes it is a professionally done copy of his seminars and personal ideas. I don't have to take notes, or miss any topic, since it is on tape. Having just started with the tapes and ideas, I feel they will help a lot, since Gary has done all the surveys, research, trial and errors, already.
Using his techniques, I have already paid for the course in two days! I would JUMP on these tapes and do what they recommend. Any future tapes Gary puts out I would also look into purchasing. No $ interest in Gary Gerber, etc., only a happy client!
I think all of you need to listen to the Gary Gerber Video's! I bought the videos from Gary for $695.00. Worth every penny! I like it, since it has a workbook, diskette tape, and 8 video cassettes.

I have heard what seems like every practice management guru at various conferences. To name some...Harriet Stein 3 times, John Gay 3 times, Dr. Kattouf once and assorted others. All those folks are wonderful and I feel blessed that I have heard their schpeils. In my opinion, Gary offers the upper level course in practice and people management. His methods are real and understandable to the average Joe OD like myself. He is funny and witty and bearable. . . . I have listened to all the comments about Gary Gerber, and yes folks, he is a "Wow". Today he spoke to myself, some colleagues and our staffs. Was it worth the day away from our practices and the income lost? You bet and I'll let you know, but I must say my staff is charged. The other doctors were so-so about paying to see the guy with all the hair; however Gary delivered a grand slam in speaking to these guys. Finally a person, from the trenches, spoke to us and gave us tools that are attainable and very usable. You may ask if we will use his ideas in actuality. You bet we will have a good time trying.
He teaches you things that will not cost very much to implement and he is extremely educationally entertaining in his delivery. Thanks Gary, for getting me out of my box, and I hope a lot of you will appreciate him in the future. And to add.....I have no financial gain in this editorial. I'm just excited and I want the rest of you to feel my enthusiasm.
To summarize, you are getting Pract. Man. 401 by a guy from the trenches. He is and will always be one of us. All of his ideas are tried and true and have been tested by patients and focus groups. Go for it . . . get the tapes or see him live. You would think that Gary is paying me!! NO WAY I just respect the man . . . and proud to be a graduate.

I don't usually give testimonials but I have Gary's tapes and I did attend his course. I consider myself fairly competent at managing our practice so I was surprised to discover that you can teach an old dog new tricks. I learned quite a few from Gary. I came away from the seminar with a renewed sense of purpose and did manage (despite a nightmare schedule) to implement many of his ideas. Surprisingly, most of them stuck. I suspect that you might be able to figure out most of the stuff that Gary teaches on your own, but I also think that it would take the average OD about 60 years to do it. In that sense Gary makes the simple mistakes obvious and shares simple strategies to fix them. The tapes were for my partner and my staff who did not attend the lecture.
In short, our practice grew around 25% since I attended Gary's lecture, and that is despite reducing my own in-office schedule by 20%. If you really want your practice to grow, I wouldn't hesitate a second to order the tapes. (P.S. I have no financial interest in Gary, his seminars or his tapes - just a satisfied customer.)

WOW! You certainly packed a lot of information into those 6 hours Sunday. I was so wound up by your presentation that I was unable to think of anything else until bedtime... and then I spent half the night still thinking/dreaming about it all.
The following morning at the office had already been set aside for a roundtable discussion with the staff about your seminar. It's a good thing we had allowed for that as the staff came in bubbling over with enthusiasm and were eagerly awaiting to undergo a metamorphosis. WOW! I heartily recommend Dr. Gerber's Power Practice seminar for anyone who practices more than 50 miles from my office!

Recently I heard a great presentation by Dr. Gary Gerber, a practice management consultant. He talked about how it's not good to simply give patients all their options, or a menu to choose from. Rather, it's better to give patients your best recommendation and tell them why. It reminded me of some of the best purchases I have made.

Gary, This has been the most enjoyable week in my 21 years of practice. The selling has been incredible. My staff has picked up on my cue and is doing a great job. I thought they were great before but they are going the extra mile. The seminar gave me an attitude adjustment and showed me how to look at things from a different perspective. Most of his ideas are easy to implement and don't require major changes. It covers a lot more than just verbal changes but they are easiest to implement initially. Today we had a walk-in shopper that wanted a price quote on bifocal lenses. My assistant (who did not attend the seminar) was pleasant to him but really didn't say the right things to "close the sale". After he left I told her what I would have done based on Gary's lecture.
She said, "Well you will get your chance as he is coming back in the door." I started talking to him and used some of Gary's techniques and he ended up getting an exam and new lenses. The best part is that he is a member of a managed care plan that I don't participate in. ( Gary would have sold him 2 pair).
Gary will give you his forms on disk for editing. I can guarantee that he will have something on his form that you didn't think of. Many of Gary's techniques involve verbal presentations changes but there is much more to it than that. He will challenge your way of thinking about certain situations. Once you understand where he is coming from you will realize that a lot of the things you do are not efficient or friendly from the patients viewpoint. Most of the changes you will make will not cost anything to implement. We had a ball and I got my moneys worth. We have only started implementing a few of Gary's ideas and the results have been dramatic. - We attended the Gerber seminar in Columbus Ohio along with 5 staff members. I really enjoyed the seminar. It was by far the best meeting that I have attended. The problem is that since attending the seminar I don't have enough down time to implement all the programs that I want to. My practice is busier and I am much happier practicing Optometry than in any other time in my 21 year career.

I had the opportunity to attend a Gary Gerber seminar in Seattle last week and it was fantastic. I was very impressed with his many common sense techniques for practice building. I've been guilty in the past of having the altruistic attitude and saying that I'm not in optometry for the money, but Gary brought up a very good point. We're in practice to see patients and we're in business to make money. Thanks Gary, you're a valuable asset to the list and optometry . . . recommend the videos even if you have been to a seminar.

I want to thank you for the great seminar you put on in Columbus. Gary, I came away with some great ideas, and the motivation to implement them. My co-workers also are pumped up. By the way, I took just one of Gary's ideas and turned it into $2,500 in new patients in the last two weeks! That way more than paid for the seminar.

Gerber Rocks! Yesterday I had a problem patient come into the office with an industrial grade grievances/problem... the kind that could ruin your day. Patti attached a note to the patient chart detailing the situation with the tag "This calls for a Gerber solution, what do you think?" I agreed. Result: happy patient, happy staff, happy doctor.
I recently had the opportunity to attend Dr. Gary Gerber's Power Practice Seminar in Columbus Ohio. The seminar was educational, entertaining, enlightening, and most importantly, one of the most worthwhile investments I've made in recent years. Recouping the tuition fee is a no-brainer... and with minimal diligence and implementation, you can multiply it many fold. Those of you who are looking for fresh ideas that are easy to employ, attending one of Gary's seminars can definitely improve your bottom line.

OK folks, here's the real dope on this Gerber character and his road show...... Back in September 1997, I took 2 staff members to Gary's Chicago Seminar. After registration and 3 hotel rooms, travel etc., I figure I had about $1350.00 in the thing. So how was it?
First of all, anyone can do a seminar and be a fantastic motivator for a crowd in need of some fresh juice. All it takes is a few new-sounding ideas, with a different twist, some good props, and a good sense of humor. These alone will get "Excellent" on an exit opinion survey for the presenter. Also, asking people what they think right afterwards, in my mind, has little merit. So, I decided I'd wait about 6 months, see what happened IN A REAL OFFICE and then post my opinion.
In order for there to be anything left of value after a seminar, there has to be some usable take home substance in the stuff spewed forth in the seminar. And that, my fellow interested colleagues, is where Gary Gerber parts with the average circuit lecturer. I've seen the other "big two consultants" and while I was fired up when I left, I soon found myself unable to implement most of their ideas without either lots of money or lots of staff (which also means lots of money...forever!). Remember, it's always easier to tweak a huge operation for better results than a small one. ...and I'm a small one.
Gary's stuff was different. It doesn't cost a bunch of money, lots of it is common sense. Sometimes I kicked myself for not thinking of these things. Most of the stuff he presents is tested beforehand. I've never heard another PM lecturer say "This is what our research showed that works and why " Would you think to specifically test to find out that red ink on a recall notice produce higher rates than blue ink? Gary does, and oops, I guess I just let a guarded secret out.
I said I'd wait 6 months and what happened? Well, at the end of August, before the seminar, we were up 12% for the year so far. By the end of the year we ended up almost exactly 20% for the ENTIRE year. So that's 20% for the last 3 months plus an additional 8% of the prior 8 months. What changed?
Well, one of the most valuable things that happened was my staff enjoyed an opportunity to interact with staff from other offices and FINALLY realized that we all fight the same battles, and the grass (or money) isn't greener in the office down the road.. And it was noted that during Gary's presentation, there were just as many common flaws in things the Doctors do every day as there are staff problems. Of course, staffers ate this up every time we doctors were told something like, "keep your noses out of the
appointment books!" They got a nice boost from these digs on their boss. Made them feel like we were going to change to make life easier for THEM too. And of course they grumbled less about their own idiotic actions when they were mentioned as well.
We were able to change how we looked at patients, and more importantly how we looked at the office as a service tool. More pride exists in what we do, and we tend to think in terms of patient needs now rather than our own needs. Since it's hard to bring lots of new patients into the office in a hurry, there were plenty of procedures to grow the practice from the patients already there, to farm the practice. Multiple pair sales are up, referrals are up, gross sales are up, net is up (duh!) and my staff is more empowered to handle some things without me. Did the seminar pay for itself? It appears so..... in about 2 weeks. He had some simple things you can start TOMORROW, and if that showed a little success, you do something else...... and it builds.
Complaints:
1. The lunch served was a bit heavy for those sitting 4 hours
2. My Power Practice Seminar pen went dry within 3 months.... of course I told Gary that and he promptly replied "they were disposable and shouldn't last," and promptly sent 3 more in the mail to complete a year's supply!
3. I'm not getting one thin dime for writing this.

I attended Dr. Gerber's seminar a few weeks ago and I found so much useful practice building information, that it will take a long time to put it all into effect. However, even if you implement 10% of what he teaches, you will improve your practice and its' bottom line. Not only is his information useful, he is also quite entertaining! I recommend his seminar to all O.D.'s out there, except of course any that practice near me!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep up the good work Dr. Gerber.

This is a shameless plug for Gary Gerber's practice management seminar; unsolicited, I might add. I attended the seminar last week, and found that it was not only informative, but extremely practical. Not kind of "Well, you just have to advertise more", but much more tuned to the realities of managed care and mail order. Gary's interesting to listen to, and his suggestions can be put to work immediately with your next patient. Definitely worth checking out!

Having recently attended Gary Gerber's seminar in San Francisco I want to express my appreciation for some of the information that Gary is putting out at his seminars. Gary is providing the information that our professional societies and schools left out. One of the things I appreciate about Gary Gerber is that he does have a message we have not heard enough from our schools and associations. And that is that the way to success may NOT be how low you can go.

If you are near any of Gary Gerber's lectures, walk, run or fly. He will give you in one day what you need in your practice for a good long while. And when you are through with what he has told you, it will be time for part two. We need individuals like Gary Gerber who can unearth the hidden talents in all of us.

Gary is on the cutting edge of practice management. He makes you step outside the box of normal thinking to see things in a new light. I just returned with my office staff from the Gary Gerber seminar in Dallas yesterday. It was a great experience for all and the staff really enjoyed it. The staff finally learned a better answer to "how much are your contacts?" We're implementing 4 or 5 things we learned this morning that will improve our process and business flow. Check him out when he comes to your area.

Your seminar was a wonderful experience. I cannot believe the impact it has had on my staff and my own enthusiasm. They cannot do enough to satisfy and excite patients. We immediately raised our examination fee by 30% and have not had a single comment from patients.
I just wanted to give you an update and a thanks for your help with my practice. We attended your seminar in New Jersey. In fact, my office had the pleasure of being the ping pong ball miners. We have implemented many of your concepts and what a difference it has made. It is truly unbelievable, but my PROFIT IS UP BY 75%. My net/gross ratio has changed from 18% to 34%. I have a dedicated loyal staff and we are in the process of deciding which plan to drop next.

The seminar offered by Dr Gary Gerber two weeks ago in New Jersey addressed many of the critical aspects of efficient office management. My staff and I found it to be informative, entertaining, and most importantly practical. I want to thank those who have recommended Gerber's seminar and Gary himself for explaining in a few short hours what probably took many successful practices years to learn.

I also just returned from Gary's seminar... we will implement just one of Gary's ideas tomorrow morning which will guarantee a $50,000 (yes, $50 K) increase in my net this year! If you haven't signed up for this seminar, you need to have your head (not your eyes) examined!
I met with my CPA a few days ago and wanted to share some exciting news with you... my "net" is up over 35% for the 3 month period since we attended the Power Practice Seminar... and we've implemented less than half of your ideas. I'm, needless to say, thrilled. Working less, making more money... man, optometry is great! If you need to use me as a reference feel free to do so.

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Just got back from a Power Practice seminar by Gary Gerber. Most practice management courses I take with my staff leave me enthused for about two days until my staff finally gets me to leave everything just like it was. This was the first time I have ever taken my staff to a meeting where they ALL left as excited about change as I was. Gary really knows how to relate to the challenges the staff meets on a daily basis and really gets us all to think differently about how to handle everyday situations. We have enough to do to keep us busy until mid-98! But we will enjoy the changes and especially the process of getting there. Definitely worth the time and expense.
There are many 'experts' who will gladly sell you a bill of goods about how to pressure and sell your patients extras they may or may not want. Gary Gerber is not one of them. He doesn't give you 'magic answers' or 'catchy phrases' but helps you learn your own strengths and weaknesses and tells you things you should have already learned yourself. He will help you change your attitude about what good you do for your patients and why you should be compensated fairly for your time, not at the lowest price offered by some plan.
I have heard several practice management 'experts' at meetings and in articles in the magazines and had the same feelings you did about many of them. They presented ideas that would make money but were things I could not do in good faith. This is not what you get from Gary Gerber. He has worked hard to research his ideas, to prove they worked before he promoted them, and to learn better ideas. He is also very receptive to listening to your ideas and helping you expand on them.
If you ever go to one of his seminars, and actually DO even 50% of the ideas you come up with during the seminar, you WILL be more successful, more happy with yourself and better respected as the expert by your patients. It doesn't take magic answers or catchy phrases, it just takes hard work and understanding things from the point of view of the patient. Having finally gone to one of his seminars, I feel it was money very well spent and recommend it for anyone over 50 miles from my office (preferably 100).

I attended Gary's seminar in Dallas, and on day one after the seminar, I took two boys, age 13 and 15, and turned "lenses only" in each of their old frames into THREE complete pair for each of them (for a total of six pair). Total sale--$1,189.00 (with exam fee). It was so fun, I tried it again on another patient, but this time, A MEDICAID PATIENT!!! I couldn't believe it! I sold a second complete pair to a Medicaid patient using his strategies. And not only did I feel VERY comfortable doing it, because they NEEDED the extra pairs, but all three patients were totally ecstatic and felt they had gotten a very good deal (which they did). None of them left feeling that they were pressured into something that they didn't need.

If it were easy to summarize what he teaches in a few lines, online, or even in a few pages, he wouldn't have ODs paying him what they do to teach them. People don't rave about him BEFORE taking his courses. They do it AFTER. He does not sell a bill of goods. He teaches common sense principles that should be required in the curriculum of all OD schools.

Well I did it. Packed up the wife and staff and flew to Dallas to "sit at the feet of the master." Short of a private audience with the Dali Lama it's the most enlightenment you'll get in this lifetime. Gary Gerber is a sharp cat! The seminar was packed with info that I am using to make my office the best it can be. My staff enjoyed the seminar, as well as seeing Dallas. We went out Saturday night in a stretch limo courtesy of a contest we ran for two months previous to the seminar in the office. Thanks for the idea Gary. We all enjoyed Dallas and the seminar.

My staff and I recently attended a seminar. Personally, I came away with some new attitudes on how to handle patients. How to convince them our office is superior to others. My staff came away more fired up than I have seen them for some time. They are looking forward to and actively planning for changes we are going to make. If you get a chance to go - do it. I ain't that expensive folks. Take your staff. You will be glad you did.

I was at the Gerber Power Practice Seminar last Friday in Seattle, WA. All I can say is . . . EXCELLENT! Gary - Where and when is the next seminar? My staff needs to go too!

I also attended Dr. Gerber's seminar in Chicago. I would rate the seminar as definitely worth the time and the $$. Two docs and 7 staff went and we will benefit from the experience. We will have a more people pleasing office in the future.

Just wanted to let you know how much my staff & I enjoyed your seminar yesterday. It was fast paced, informative, interesting and definitely thought provoking. As I opened the business section of today's newspaper, a well known professor of management at FL International University had an article titled, "Encourage workers to think 'out of the box'." It reinforced what I had heard you tell us yesterday. We're looking forward to incorporating & adapting many of your ideas into our practice. Once again, thank you.
